Guitar!

So I'm thinking about getting a cheap guitar on Craig's List and trying to learn how to play it.

I asked a bunch of people at SpringCon to teach me, but there wasn't exactly time to sit down and launch into a lesson.

But I miss making music. And I feel like my artsy kid credentials would be more legitimate if I could sit on my front porch and annoy the neighbors with poorly played acoustic emo music. And as far as the learning-how-to-play goes, well, that's what the internet is for.

Thoughts? Advice? Words of warning?

I highly recommend teaching yourself! That's what I did. Rather than relying on the internet though, I'd suggest getting a good chord book. They're pretty cheap, and much more dependable. Also, you can take them everywhere with you.

Also, you WILL get frustrated. I can guarantee it. Just keep with it though. You'll sound crappy at first, and your fingers will hurt, but don't let that discourage you.

As far as tab websites go, I would recommend ultimate_guitar.com

Nylon strings are easier on your fingers to begin with. Also, make sure the action isn't to high (the little bar that the strings rest on in front of the bridge) otherwise your guitar will be much more difficult to play than it should be.

Have fun!

p.s. if for some reason you decide you don't want to teach yourself, my dad's a guitar teacher!
